CARE’s work in Ethiopia was established in 1984 in response to the widespread and acute famine between 1983 and 1984. Although CARE continues to carry out emergency feeding, the focus of our work in Ethiopia has shifted beyond emergency relief to longer term rehabilitation and development.

Ethiopia remains one of the poorest countries in the world, renowned for its long periods of droughts and famines. Since 1983 WaterAid has been enabling communities to gain access to safe, sustainable water supplies and sanitation. These basic human rights underpin health, education and livelihoods and form the first, essential step in overcoming poverty. WaterAid works closely with eight local NGOs (non-governmental organizations), the local private sector and local and regional government departments in water, sanitation and hygiene projects. We also work with a wide range of other bodies to influence water and sanitation policies on a national level.

Improving Health and Hygiene Epicenter health centers provide primary health care for all, especially mothers, and immunizations for children. They also teach men and women how to improve their health and hygiene. The Hunger Project-Ethiopia has pioneered a sanitation program through the implementation of pit latrines in each household in the epicenter community. In cooperation with the District Health Office and District Office of Women's Affairs, The Hunger Project-Ethiopia provides training to partners regarding gender equality, harmful traditional practices, traditional birth attendants training, family planning and HIV/AIDS awareness workshops.

USAID's main objective in Ethiopia is to overcome the country's near-constant state of food insecurity. Natural disasters, extreme poverty and underdevelopment, poor water and land management, and inadequate access to health care, education, and economic opportunity are the main causes of underdevelopment. USAID's work in Ethiopia improves disaster prediction and response management, economic growth, governance structures, and the quality of health care and education.

The Tesfa Foundation expands opportunities for children and youth where the necessary resources to build self-reliance are inadequate. We strengthen families and communities in ways that make for sustainable networks to support children and youth properly.
